Preface

This guide gives you the basic procedural information necessary operate the Oracle Video Server (OVS). Before you begin, read the Oracle Video Server System Tour for a general overview of the OVS.

This guide is divided into the following chapters:

Chapter 1, "Tasks of the Oracle Video Server Administrator"outlines the tasks required to administer the OVS.
Chapter 2, "System Planning for the Oracle Video Server"covers the decisions you must make before you begin an installation of the OVS.
Chapter 3, "Operating the Oracle Video Server"describes the start-up procedures for the OVS.
Chapter 4, "Preparing and Loading Content" describes the operations needed to prepare multimedia content for playback.
Chapter 5, "Oracle Media Data Store Tasks and Procedures"explains how to maintain and expand the Oracle Media Data Store (MDS), the OVS's real-time disk system.

The following typographic and usage conventions are used in this guide:

Identifies filenames, command names, and system variables when discussed in the normal text.  

italics  

Identifies new terms and system variables when discussed in the normal text.  

constant width
 

Identifies command syntax and system output.  

constant bold
 

Highlights parts of command syntax or output specific to the discussion about that command or output.  

constant italic
 

Identifies variables in examples for which a context-specific substitution should be made. For example, the variable filename would be replaced by an actual filename.

[a|b]
 

Identifies optional items.

Identifies a choice of optional items, each separated by a vertical bar (|); any one option can be specified. In this example you may select either a or b, but not both.  

{a|b}
 

Identifies a choice of mandatory items, each separated by a vertical bar (|). In this example you must select either a or b.  

C:>
 

Identifies the DOS-shell prompt and is used in examples.

Indicates that the preceding item can be repeated any number of times.

Operating System Conventions

This guide uses commands from MS-DOS. In the text of this guide, MS-DOS keywords appear in boldface and parameters appear in italics.
