Preface

This guide gives you the basic procedural information necessary to install the Oracle Video Server (OVS). Before you begin, read the Oracle Video Server System Tour for a general overview of the OVS, and Chapter 1, "Oracle Video Server System Planning" in the Oracle Video Server Administrator's Guide for system configuration information.

This preface discusses:

How this Guide is Organized

Please read this guide in its entirety prior to beginning any installation activities. This guide is divided into the following chapters:

Chapter 1, "Installation Requirements" provides the minimum hardware and software requirements required to operate the OVS.
Chapter 2, "Installation Information for the Oracle Video Server" discusses the information needed to install the OVS.
Chapter 3, "Pre-Installation Tasks for the Oracle Video Server" describes the tasks which must be performed prior to installing the OVS.
Chapter 4, "Installing the Oracle Video Server Software" describes the installation procedure using the Oracle Installer.
Chapter 5, "Post-Installation Tasks for the Oracle Video Server" describes tasks which should be performed once the OVS is installed.

System-Specific Information

Information in this guide generally applies to all UNIX systems unless a specific attribution in given. Details particular to one system are noted in the text of this guide.

Example Conventions

This guide shows example commands in this font:

% mdscopy /mds/video/oracle1.mpg /mds/online_video/oracle1.mpg

For an example command that is longer than a single line, a backslash (\) appears at the end of a line to indicate the command continues on the next:

% mdstar -c -b 128 -f /gfs/dev/scsi/rst053 \
/mds/video/oracle2.mpg /mds/video_archive/oracle2.mpg
Note

The backslash should not be entered on your command line. It is only used as a typographic convention.

Operating System Conventions

This guide uses commands from UNIX C-shell. In this text of this guide, UNIX keywords appear in boldface and UNIX parameters appear in italics.
