Post Installation Tasks
This chapter describes what happens during the installation of Net8 and what tasks must be performed after installation for basic operation. Specific topics discussed are:
Verifying Installation and Setup
Ensure that the relevant products to your planned network are installed correctly on your system. For details on how to verify installation and setup, see Appendix D, "Oracle Networking Products Installation and Setup".
Net8 Client
During installation of Net8 client software, Oracle Installer installs:
- all DLLs and EXEs
- appropriate protocol adapter for your system, based upon the currently installed protocol stack
- default configuration files
- client address caching daemon process in manual startup mode
Net8 Client Post Installation Tasks
After you install Net8, configure the service names in your network, if necessary.
Net8 Server
During installation of the Net8 server software, Oracle Installer installs:
- default configuration files
- network listener in automatic startup mode
Net8 Server Post Installation Tasks
After you install Net8 server software perform these tasks as relevant to your network configuration:
- If you are using Oracle Names, run NAMESCTL80.EXE, and issue the REORDER_NS command. See Chapter 5, "Administration Tasks" for detailed instructions.
- Modify the LISTENER.ORA file using an ASCII text editor to support additional SIDs (system identifier which uniquely identifies a database instance) using the Oracle Net8 Assistant. The default SID is ORCL.
- Use Oracle Net8 Assistant to specify Oracle Names naming method.
- Restart the listener if you have changed the LISTENER.ORA configuration file. Ensure that the listener service is set in automatic startup mode, if you want the listener to start automatically at boot time.
Oracle Names Server
During installation of Oracle Names software, the Names service is installed in manual startup mode.
Oracle Names Post Installation Tasks
If you want to use Oracle Names, after installing Oracle Names software, perform these tasks:
- Use Oracle Net8 Assistant to configure and administer the Names Server.
- Start the Oracle Names service, if you are using Oracle Names. Change the startup mode to Automatic if you will be continually using the service. See Chapter 5, "Administration Tasks".
Connection Manager
During installation:
- Connection Manager is installed in manual startup mode.
- The Connection Manager configuration file CMAN.ORA is created automatically. This default file supports a TCP/IP protocol environment.
Connection Manager Post Installation Tasks
Perform these tasks after installing Net8 software, if you want to use Connection Manager:
- If you are using Oracle Names, run the REORDER_NS command using the NAMESCTL80.EXE utility. See Chapter 5, "Administration Tasks" for detailed instructions.
- Modify the CMAN.ORA configuration file, if necessary. For example, modify the file if you want to enable multiplexing, access control, or multi-protocol interchange (MPI) features. See Net8 Administrator's Guide and Chapter 5, "Administration Tasks" of this guide.
- Start the service, and change the startup mode to automatic. See Chapter 5, "Administration Tasks" for detailed instructions.
After performing the post installation tasks appropriate for your configuration, continue to Chapter 4, "Configuring the Network".
